Amber Ale

American Amber Ale

Amber Ale

The beer that helped build our brewery; Bell’s Amber Ale features both toasted and sweet caramel notes from carefully selected malts, balanced with herbal and citrus hop aromas. Capped by a clean bitterness, it’s incredibly versatile with food, but very tasty on its own.

Why don't we list IBUs?

There is a difference between absolute bitterness and perceived bitterness. IBUs are useful for homebrewers for the purpose of clone recipes, but it doesn’t always tell the whole story. Expedition Stout is a good example. It has more IBUs than more traditional hoppy beers like Two Hearted and Hopslam.

Label history

First brewed as Great Lakes Amber in 1985, our flagship beer featured a series of shorebirds: a seagull, wood duck and a heron. As the brewery grew, the wood duck and seagull labels were phased out and the heron become the sole label for Amber Ale in 1990.

Eleven years later, a series of paintings were chosen for Amber's packaging featuring Michigan "inspired" landscapes from local Michigan artist, Kathleen Kalinowski. As part of our packaging refresh in 2016, Amber's label and packaging went back to the heron.
